There is always a risk of an injury whenever there is any construction work going on, and in some of our other workplaces. This does not have to be the norm, as there are things we can do to keep the risks down, if not out. In some cases, certain risks are unavoidable. This raises the question of the amount of risk that can be deemed acceptable by those who will have to do the work.
Risk comes about when its frequency, probability of happening, and the severity of its effects is calculated. Acceptance of risk has to start at the top level of an organization, and then it flows down. The task of controlling risk falls on management. They have access to certain tools that help understand risk and keep it at acceptable levels. They have for maintaining a job safety analysis tool.
The employees at the ground level need to take part in the efforts to keep these risks minimal. When a project is underway, those who will be involved need to have been told of their participation. They also need to be aware of all dangers they might face, and how best they are to be prepared for them.
Those on the ground also tend to see most of the risks, even if they do not report them. There has to be a way of getting this important information captured. It is critical that there is set a point at which the risks are acceptable, and beyond which they are not. This will be possible after those in charge of such teams grasp the full picture of the work environment, and the health and safety dangers that lurk therein.
There are no two people who can look at risks the same way. While it may seem too dangerous to one, another person may find it a normal site. Therefore, communicating the presence of risk becomes complicated. The work of the JSA tool then is to make the gathering of important information simpler and readily available for each person. It will also make it easier for people to see the risks and controls on the ground.
This tool will lead to a reduction of the risks. Through this tool, all those who are part of the job force shall interact and have the same understanding of the job at hand, the procedures involved, and the hazards likely to be faced as the job goes on. It needs to be implemented in full if its benefits are to be realized. This is how they will open up to give the relevant information for his exercise. They also need to know that what they share shall be taken with the gravity it deserves.
